Possibly the worst way to pickup a woman. Ever.
A friend of mine just told me a story last week about how she got picked up by this guy at TGI Fridays. He walked over to her table and asked if he could buy her a drink because he'd had a REALLY hard week. She, not being one who takes drinks from men of whom bear no interest, declined. He then preceded to tell her that his son had died two days ago. Of course she was horrified, especially when he worked up tears and his buddy pulled out a "memory" card with a picture. He explained that he had been practically comatose all week after the funeral. Wait uh second? Didn't he say his son had died TWO days ago? She put two and two together, resisted the urge to dump her drink all over him and bolted.
Can you believe that? How low are some guys? I would really love to meet their mothers and tell them just what kind of kid they raised (that is- if there mother didn't die TWO days ago). Makes me all the merrier knowing what kind of a man I have. Definitely not a Slimy McSlimerson like those dudes. Sheesh.
So. The it seems that y'all want to know where that house is? Well. I'd love to tell you but I'm trying to be more cautious about providing to many details to the whole freaking world (thank you internet!). The only thing I'm going to say is that its in a nice, quiet neighborhood close to downtown (yes, its in the city) and we put an offer on it last night. Wha? Yup. That's right. We, Ashlie and Joel Ewen, placed an offer on a real house not made out of cardboard or Saran wrap. Very exciting moment in our 9 months of marriage. Also a wee bit scary. Starting to think about the mortgage payment makes me sweat and then all I smell is peaches for the rest of the day (thanks freakin' peach deodorant!). The crazy part? We were approved for 100k more than what we'd purchase this home for. $100,000 more. That's like 100,000 frostys or nuggets (anyone else hate that commercial?)!! Our mortgage payment will still be twice what were paying for rent but we'll have a lot of extra cash to save for emergencies, furniture (hello bed!) and other fun things. Not like we'll be rubbing our bodies in $100 bills anytime soon but it could be worse. All in all, I think it was a wise decision. The pregnancy scare/excitement really pushed us to consider more of the "what-ifs" of a two income family.
Anywho. More about the house. The kitchen REALLY needs updating, but everything else shines. If our offer gets accepted there are only a couple things we want to work on. First, we want to completely redo the kitchen. Its only 9x9 so it shouldn't be to expensive. Anyone have any good ideas of cabinets, flooring etc.? I was thinking about just refinishing the old cabinets, but the layout is less than ideal. Secondly we're going to add a roof deck. Awesome. We'd even have an amazing view of skyline downtown and possibly a lake. Yea! And lastly, but very importantly, we plan on venting the fireplace. Apparently some moron bricked it in. Who bricks in a perfectly good gas fireplace? Grrr....
Must be patient though. Were not even sure if our (competitive) offer will be accepted. But don't fret friends, family and blogging community, you'll be the first to know. I'll leave a couple more pictures as a parting gift.
In order:
The other side of cute 17x14 master bedroom with his and her mirrored closets.
Kitchen that is in need of some TLC. New cabinets or not?
View through the dining room to the 17x17 living room with french doors (did I
mention it has the most adorable porch?). I will be stocking up on tons of potted plants and maybe a porch swing or two ;)

p.s. I swear that I'm doing all I can to become a good lil' east coaster. But? Sometimes I slip up. Like today for example. Went to the grocery store wearing a winter coat, ear muffs (don't make fun of me- they looked cool!), capri's and flip flops. I can't even begin to tell you the looks I got. I just have no sense when it comes to stuff like that. Should I blame the west coast or working at Abercrombie and Fitch? I'll let you decide....

What some children deserve...what they get? A coke.

well, I have resolved never to judge people's clothes again, cause you never know when you may end up as That Girl in the grocery or wherever!
I love love the house, and I am sure if you get it, it will further incite my already raging homeowner jealousy! (I mean, I will be SO happy for you. Because I will, I swear.) I think you could slap a coupla coats of nice white paint on those cabinets, attach a cute knob, paint the walls a sky-ish blue and call it shabby chic French countryside or something?
Just stumbled upon your blog tonight!
I live in Canton.. love the pics of the house.. where is it?
As for your question about affordable kitchens.. believe it or not IKEA is a great place to get some great cabinets! We just redid our kitchen and LOVE it! friends of ours in Fells Point did the same thing.. we did alot of research and my very anal husband actually found the IKEA kitchens totally acceptable compared to lots of other stuff we saw in places like Home Depot.
The mortgage panic is totally normal. It sucks but it always works out in the end. GOOD LUCK!!
OK roof top deck, hmmmmm. That about narrows it down to 3 city hoods. Ihave a guess but won't say on here!
Who is this anonymous person up there, I live in Canton too. Shit I was supposed to keep tighter wraps on my location. Oh and I was going to suggest IKEA too. I hate IKEA for other reasons but they do have decent kitchen stuff!
Your potential house looks awesome!! LOVE it, and oh how I wish I saw you in the grocery store w/that get up! Now if I see it again I'll know it's you b/c yeah, we don't dress like that out here in the winter! :) Who knows, maybe you started something!
It's the City view and the View of the lake from the deck that should narrow it down to 1 'hood! :)
and I found this blog thru your blog!! HEEEHEEE!!
Since I am not a blogger myself.. just a "voyeur" I picked anonymous!
The pictures of the house look great. I hope things work out and they accept your offer. Stuff like that is always stressful. And smelling like peaches is not always a bad thing.
As for where to get cabinets...we got ours (in the house we just sold) at IKEA and they ROCKED. We got the all stainless steel ones. They were sturdy and cleaned up nicely. I hear you can also get laminate flooring at IKEA! It might be worth a trip to check it out. Beware, kitchen items are the most expensive out of any room in the house. So, you might want to start looking for deals. Try some "scratch and dent" places in your town (the scratches and dents might not even be noticable once the item is installed).
Anyway....keep us posted!
(and stop wearing flip flops...it's the dead of winter girl!)
A: Guys can be so creepy/gross/stupid sometimes.
B: I hate that commercial too.
C: Just paint the cupboards for now, and wait to redo the cupboards and layout until you've had a chance to use the kitchen for a while. That way you'll know EXACTLY how you want to change it according to how you live/work in it. You'll come to learn what works and doesn't work for you.
It's a west coast thing.
When some friends of mine moved here (SF Bay Area) from Oklahoma, they woudl always comment on the sillypeople wearing sandals and sweaters/jackets. Sensible people wear solid shoes when it is cold enought to wear a sweater or jacket.
Two years later? those two are sandal wearing fools all year round, and now their families make fun of them when they go home in the winter.
Hey Ashlie!! Good luck on the house... it's very exciting!! I have a roof deck and LOVE it...Aongus and I sit up there all the time in the summer. It's so nice to have breakfast and read the papers all morning on Sundays.
Who knows where to download XRumer 5.0 Palladium?
Help, please. All recommend this program to effectively advertise on the Internet, this is the best program!
Dogs looking great!!! By the way this is possibly the WORST pickup I have ever heard. Also the house is looking great and that picture of the boy on the plane: CLASSIC, i mean how did he get there. Crazy, crazy....
